Zeiss Medical Technology intends to unveil new ophthalmic innovations within its cataract and corneal refractive workflows.

The Carl Zeiss Meditec unit plans to showcase these technologies at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery conference next month. As part of its ecosystem, the new offerings bolster Zeiss’ leadership position in ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical workflow solutions.

Updates include a new trifocal intraocular lens, updated corneal refractive workflows and a hyperopia indication for the Smile Pro. Zeiss also plans to unveil its new Atlas 500 for cataract and corneal refractive workflows. The company also touts a refreshed Visulas portfolio with therapeutic laser enhancements and connectivity across workflows.

“Our long-proven legacy of innovation continues to meet the ever-evolving needs of healthcare providers and the billions of patients they serve around the world,” said Euan S. Thomson, Ph.D., President of the Ophthalmology Strategic Business Unit and Head of the Digital Business Unit for ZEISS Medical Technology. “As we continue to extend our position in digital ophthalmic solutions, ZEISS is proud to unveil our latest workflow innovations that are helping to transform the way surgical care is practiced today. We’ll continue to invest in data-driven solutions that enhance clinical decision making and help set new standards of care within the cataract and corneal refractive workflows.”

More about the new Zeiss offerings

The new AT Elana trifocal intraocular lens combines the company’s leading technologies to maximize patient satisfaction. It features trifocal technology on a hydrophobic c-loop platform and a fully preloaded injector for safe implantation.

Zeiss also plans to showcase its complete corneal refractive workflow for presbyopia management. The Presbyond workflow addresses individual needs and visual challenges for patients with presbyopia, the company said.

The Laser Vision Correction (LVC) portfolio extends the standard for refractive correction, the company said. It intends to expand the indication of lenticule extraction with the Smile Pro for hyperopia with or without astigmatism. The company said it plans to demonstrate how surgeons can treat myopia using its digitally connected VisuMax 800 with smart robotics support.

Additionally, Zeiss said it reached a new milestone with more than 8 million eyes treated with Smile to date. The small incision lenticule extraction system represents a key element in the company’s LVC portfolio, it said.

Zeiss intends to showcase its new Atlas 500, a next-generation corneal topography system. The state-of-the-art, multimodality solution for anterior eye offers precise corneal topography, pupillometry and dry eye assessment. It integrates into both the company’s corneal refractive and cataract workflows.

Finally, Zeiss said it refreshed its Visulas therapeutic laser portfolio to provide advanced capabilities for ensuring safe and effective treatment. The upgrades also promote operator comfort and optimize the practice workflow for efficiency.
