With the first day of classes for the 2023-24 academic year just a week away, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh college and campus leaders are sharing programming and staffing updates. Today, Dean Linda Haling provides updates for the College of Education and Human Services.

What’s new in your college for the coming year?

Faculty and staff in the College of Education and Human Services have moved back into our newly refreshed spaces in the Clow Academic Complex after 18 months of renovation. We are very excited for our students to have modern learning spaces with state-of-the art technology, as well as multiple gathering places.

What do you see as some of the important trends/ changes coming for students entering the careers/professions reflected in your college offerings?

One of the most important trends/changes coming for education is artificial intelligence. The use of AI for teaching and learning impacts not only how our students learn in college but also what they will need to prepare them when they are in charge of their own classrooms and preK-12 students.

What are the most important things students learn by going to college but not necessarily in the classroom?

Certainly, what is learned in the classroom is important, but college is more than academics—it’s an experience. It is an opportunity for young adults to learn independence, build relationships, create lifelong friendships and experience new perspectives.

If you could personally go back and take one more undergraduate class, what would it be and why?

I used to refer to myself as a professional student because I loved taking classes. For me, each class seemed to open more possibilities and a better understanding of the world. Although I ultimately chose education as a field of study, if I could go back and take one more undergraduate class, it would be criminalistics.
