T. Simeon Ananou Named DoIT VP and Chief Information OfficerT. Simeon Ananou has been named Stony Brook University’s Vice President for the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) and Chief Information Officer (CIO), effective August 14, 2023. The announcement was made July 7 by Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration Jed Shivers.

Ananou emerged from a highly competitive pool of candidates after an extensive national search.

“With over 20 years of IT leadership at several higher education institutions, Dr. Ananou has remained passionate throughout his career about the role that Information Technology has in transforming education, research and learning for students,” Shiver said. “He has also served as an advocate and champion for building IT teams and environments that are responsive, efficient, and focused on customer service to support the changing needs of faculty, staff and students, University-wide.”

“I am grateful to have been appointed to this important leadership role at an AAU [Association of American Universities] institution,” Ananou said. “I am looking forward to forging partnerships within the Stony Brook and SUNY communities for greater impact on society.”

Ananou will bring his extensive IT experience and skills to the versatile leadership team and support staff already in place within the Division of Information Technology. He will be partnering with academic deans, stakeholders and many others across Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine to understand, collaborate, develop and enhance IT systems, create and implement an IT governance structure, and oversee a university-wide strategic IT plan.

Ananou most recently served as Chief Information Officer at the University of Vermont (UVM) where he provided executive leadership and oversight for all aspects of IT including Information Security, Network & Telecommunications, Systems Administration, Research Computing, Enterprise Applications, Client Services, and Enterprise Technology Services. Under his direction, Vermont successfully migrated from a highly decentralized IT operation into an evolving, centralized IT shared service model that holistically and efficiently serves the campus community. Ananou also holds an adjunct faculty appointment in the Department of Education at UVM.

Prior to his arrival at Vermont, which began in 2018, Ananou served as the Vice President for Information Technology Services and CIO at the University at Albany; Chief Information Officer at Salisbury University; and Associate Provost for Information & Administrative Technology Services and CIO at Slippery Rock University. Throughout his career, Dr. Ananou has routinely presented at national and international engagements, made notable media appearances, and has been featured in several publications. He is actively involved in numerous professional organizations including EDUCAUSE, the American Council on Education, and Internet2 where he is currently serving as Chair of the Community Engagement Program Advisory Group (CEPAG).

Ananou holds a B.A. in International Relations from The Ohio State University, an M.B.A. in Computer Information Systems from Baker College, and a D.Ed. in Administration and Leadership studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he attended Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management.

In his campus message, Shivers extended his gratitude to Lyle Gomes and professor Robert J. Harrison, who co-chaired the search committee, as well as the search committee members.
